About Children in Shelter

Children in Shelters is a DSS funded program administered through CCEH to support childcare needs for homeless families living in emergency shelter or transitional housing and for families in Housing First for Families, Beyond Shelter,  and the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Program (HPRP).  The Fund offers the opportunity for parents to seek employment and/or sustain employment until alternative, possibly permanent childcare assistance is obtained.  Services may include covering childcare fees at a licensed facility or licensed individual provider,  transportation needs and related costs associated with childcare provision. The Children in Shelters funds provides services for up to 2 months with possible extensions based on availability of funds.  As young children are the focus of this program, families applying must have children age 6 and under; children older than 6 may fall under childcare assistance if at least one child served in household is 6 and under.

In addition to the program, CCEH provides training and technical assistance to improve relationships and linkages between family emergency shelter, transitional housing, domestic violence shelters, early care and education programs and other mainstream services.  There are web based resources related to research and best practices for ending family homelessness, regional early care and education resources, contact information and other information deemed helpful to serving young children and their families.
